General Project Description
The project “Strengthening of women's rights and political participation in La Paz, Bolivia” was an initiative aimed at promoting the full exercise of women's rights and their active participation in decision-making spaces, using a gender and human rights approach.
The intervention took place in the municipality of La Paz, strengthening the individual and collective capacities of women leaders, as well as coordination with institutional and community actors, with the goal of reducing the political and social participation gaps that affect women at the local level.
What do we work on? / Our focus
During the implementation of the project, priority was given to the following pillars:
• Strengthening the knowledge and exercise of women's rights.
• Promotion of political and social participation in community and institutional spaces.
• Strengthening of female leadership with a gender approach.
• Awareness-raising on gender equality and participatory democracy.
• Coordination between women leaders and local institutional actors.
Who do we work with?
The project was implemented with:
• Community women leaders.
• Women participating in social and territorial organizations.
• Women interested in strengthening their political and social participation.
In coordination with:
• Municipal public institutions.
• Social and women's organizations.
• Local actors linked to human rights, gender, and citizen participation.








How did we implement it?
The project was developed through a training-based, participatory, and advocacy methodology, which combined:
• Training workshops on women’s rights and political participation.
• Spaces for reflection and dialogue on female leadership.
• Processes for organizational strengthening and leadership coordination.
• Meetings between women and institutional actors.
• Awareness-raising actions aimed at promoting women's political participation.
The intervention prioritized political empowerment through individual and collective strengthening, promoting the informed and conscious participation of women in their territories.
Key results
Among the project's main achievements, the following stand out:
• Capacity building for women to exercise their rights and political participation.
• Consolidation of female leadership in community and organizational spaces.
• Greater coordination between women leaders and local institutional actors.
• Increased participation of women in spaces for dialogue and decision-making.
• Community awareness-raising on gender equality and democratic participation.
Lessons learned and contributions
The project allowed for the identification of relevant lessons, including:
• The importance of creating safe spaces for strengthening women's political leadership.
• The need to coordinate training, advocacy, and actual participation.
• The value of territorial and community work to reduce participation gaps.
• The relevance of strengthening women's networks for the sustainability of these processes.
These lessons contributed to SSF Bolivia's institutional positioning in the field of women's rights and political participation.
Continuity of the process
The lessons learned and capacities strengthened in this project have been incorporated into subsequent SSF Bolivia initiatives focused on transformative leadership, social participation, and women's empowerment, contributing to broader gender equality processes at the local level.
